THE OPERA

We have reserved Stalls or Circle seats for the Glyndebourne performance of Gioachino Rossini’s sparkling comic opera The Barber of Seville, full of wit, romance, and unforgettable melodies. It follows the clever barber Figaro as he helps Count Almaviva win the heart of the spirited Rosina, outsmarting her scheming guardian Dr. Bartolo. From the barber’s famous opening number ‘Largo al factotum,’ with its cry of ‘Figaro! Figaro!,’ to Rosina’s feisty aria ‘Una voce poco fa,’ Rossini’s comic opera is a riotously entertaining affair. A 3 course set dinner without drinks is included at our hotel on the first evening, and we enjoy a set 2 course dinner without drinks at Glyndebourne after the opera on Day 2. *Price is based on twin sharing. A day trip to the lovely Northampton village of Lowick, where our destination Drayton House, is situated. A Grade 1 listed private home, known for its impressive Baroque façade designed by William Talman around 1700. The estate has remained in the same family line for centuries and is currently home to the Stopford Sackvilles.  It famously served as the filming location for the 2023 movie Saltburn. We will enjoy a private tour by Bruce Bailey the archivist/librarian.

ITINERARY

• 09:30 Coach leaves Christchurch Road
• 10:15 Arrive at The Germain Rooms Lowick village for tea/coffee
• 11:15 Arrive Drayton House for private tour with Bruce Bailey, Archivist/Librarian
• 13:30 Light  2 course lunch served in The Germain Rooms, by the ladies of the village in aid of the Germain Charity

Opportunity to walk up to St Peter’s Church, with Bruce Bailey.  This is of early medieval origin but almost entirely rebuilt during the 15th century.  A display of early 14th century stained glass, amongst the finest in the Midlands.

• 15:30 Depart Lowick village for return journey to Northampton

British Art Portfolio was set up by old friends Amanda Lowther and Louise Newton, in November 2011, following on from studying for their degrees in History of Art at the University of Leicester. Amanda and Louise were just 50 years young when they started at Leicester in 2008 as ‘mature students’.  They both enjoyed studying 20th & 21st Century British Art and Sculpture so much that they decided to start a mini pop-up gallery trading only in British Contemporary Art and Modern British Art and sculpture.  Their aim is to inspire their friends and friends of friends by bringing beautiful original art to the countryside.

Based in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside, British Art Portfolio’s Guilsborough Gallery is a hub of excitement in the Art World – paintings, engravings, sculpture and ceramics from all aspects of British Art are available to view and purchase.  The Northamptonshire art gallery overlooks the Hollowell Reservoir and the views from the window and sculpture garden are stupendous.
